  “Me?” I pointed to myself.

“Yes. That’s how I roll. I match people up with the person I feel best suited to help them. I just hope that I haven’t made things awkward for you. More awkward.”

“It’s not.” I settled my hands in my lap. “It won’t be and it won’t affect me and my work. I’m honored that you think so highly of me. The history Devon and I have is awkward in and of itself. So it wouldn’t have mattered how things played out, that was a given. It’s something I have to get my head around and move past.” It sounded like I was rehearsing for something. Saying lines to myself so I wouldn’t forget.

“Well, if you need to talk I’m here. I’m here to support.”

“Thank you. I appreciate it. It’s just weird when you see someone after so long and you kind of erase them from your life and they come back.” I hadn’t meant to launch into more. The words just came.

“Yes, I imagine so. I expected him to be elsewhere now.”

“Me too. It was supposed to be goodbye on his wedding day, and it’s weird working with him again. You know he first spoke to me because he flipped his coin?”

Dr. Morgan templed his fingers and gave me a small smile. That curiosity flickered in his eyes again.

  “Oh yeah? What happened?”

“He flipped his coin and asked me where I was from. Then he showed me the coin and told me it told him to talk to me.”

He laughed. “Great pick up line.”

“I dared him to talk to me without that damn coin the next time he saw me.”

  “Did he?”

“No, he said he flipped the coin and he couldn’t accept my dare.” I laughed as the memory entered my mind. I’d liked Devon even before he spoke to me. I’d seen him amongst the other surgical interns and definitely got sucked in by his gorgeousness. When I saw he’d had the personality to match I was so taken with him.

“Sounds interesting,” Dr. Morgan stated, bringing me out of my thoughts.

I blinked several times to refocus and regain my former stance.

“Yeah, but…thanks for asking. I’m good. Looking forward to next week.”

When he gave me a firm nod I finished off my hot chocolate.

He then went on to talking about plans for next week. All talk of Devon forgotten like we hadn’t mentioned him.

I never forgot though. Much as I tried.

I hoped to forget by tonight at the party.

Paige and I were going to a house party put on by one of the guys in neurosurgery who was known for his wildness.

Paige always brought Ryan to these sorts of things but he was out of town on business. She was supposed to be joining me solo and I’d looked forward to it because it was the first time in a long time that we’d gotten the chance to have wild girly fun.

I got to the party fashionably late, hoping to meet her there. Except that she was nowhere to be found when I arrived. I waited for half an hour thinking it was weird for her to be so late. When I looked for my phone to call her, I cursed myself when I realized I’d left it on silent mode. There were a few calls from her and a text telling me she wasn’t going to make it. Her car had broken down.

Leaving and heading home crossed my mind but I thought of staying. It wasn’t the first time that I’d gone to a party by myself. And it wasn’t as if I didn’t know the people here.

And…as I gazed across the large hall to the sofa area, I saw one person I knew very well.

Devon sat with a leggy blonde woman talking it up while he drank a beer.

She reached over and pressed her hand to his chest and he leaned forward like he was going to kiss her.

I looked away before that happened, cursing myself again for the pang of jealousy that took me.

This was such shit. I shouldn’t feel like this. I should feel nothing.

  Yet I did.

I marched over to the buffet table that had been set up with all the drinks. I grabbed two bottles of Corona and a Jack D.

Friday nights were for fun. I was going to have some. And forget.

That damn Devon…I wish like hell he had no effect on me.

“Heyyy, Kelly,” someone slurred and tugged on my arm.

It was Connor. Adrian was next to him. Both looked wasted already.

  “Guys,” I bubbled.

“Don’t tell me you’re drinking by yourself.” Connor chuckled in a very drunken manner that suggested he’d gotten here the minute the party started and had started drinking from then.

  “I am.”

“Come with us. Fun Friday’s fun, Friday fun.”

Yes. I couldn’t have agreed more with his nonsense. “Sure.”

As I linked my arm with his I swore I caught Devon watching me.

I looked away and continued to the kitchen with Connor.

  Chapter 8

  Devon

I’d watched her go with the guys.

I was even determined to leave her with them until I heard someone yelling “Strip Poker!” from the direction where they went.

  The kitchen.

I knew the guys were playing poker but the stripping part was a big no. A big hell no.

I got up to get her the minute I heard that but damn it I’d drunken too much and my damn legs could barely carry me.

I’d gotten to the stage where I was probably ready to call it a night and get a taxi home. When I saw the craziness in the kitchen I knew straightaway that it was going to be difficult to get to Kelly.

She was the only girl at the table.

Those pricks had definitely set it up that way. Connor, Adrian, and Gunner—whose house this was—were at the table in the kitchen.

Connor just had his shirt off, Adrian was in his boxers, Gunner was still fully clothed, and Kelly was undoing the buttons on her top.

Pushing past the crowd who were cheering her on, I stumbled over to her and grabbed her hands.

“Stop it! What the hell are you doing?” I shouted, probably a little too loud.

“Unhand me!” she huffed, swatting my hands free. “It’s my turn to strip.”

She was drunk. As drunk as the guys were. On the table in the mixture of playing cards were a series of empty bottles of drinks. Beer and other alcoholic beverages.

She had at least ten in front of her.

“Kelly, you can’t strip in front of all these people. Come, I’m taking you home.”

“No! Go back to your skank.” She swatted my hands away when I reached for her again.

“Hey, dude, leave the woman to strip if she wants to. What’s your problem man?” Gunner asked glaring at me.

“Yeah, stop spoiling the fun,” Connor added, barely able to talk.

“Yes, Devon, don’t spoil the fun,” Kelly intoned and ripped the top. The guys cheered when the buttons popped off and went flying across the table.

I may have been categorically wasted but not gone out of my mind to leave her here with them, and not after what she did next.

She opened up her top revealing her massive, fully rounded breasts and filled her palms with them before starting to shake and jiggle.

“Doctors, do you want to check my heartbeat?” she cooed with wild seduction.

That made them all go wild with the seduction that flowed from her and I swore my hair turned gray from the shock.

While she continued to jiggle I attempted to cover her up.

Once again she swatted my hands away.

“Let me check your heartbeat,” Connor said, actually reaching out to touch her breast.

I stopped him with a fist to his face that knocked him off his chair. Adrian started to laugh while Kelly just pointed.

“Oops,” she said with a giggle.

I’d had enough. Against her protests I grabbed her and tossed her over my shoulder. It was the only way to get her out. Pick her up and carry her.

We must have looked quite comical with me marching out of the house with h
er while she was literally kicking and screaming, calling me a prick and an asshole.

I found my phone and pressed the button on the app for an Uber.

Thankfully it came within a few minutes but for the life of me I couldn’t remember Kelly’s zip code.

So I did the only thing I could do and took her back to my place. She’d fallen asleep on the way over and woke up cursing me again when I picked her up and carried her inside the apartment.

I didn’t know how I managed to get up the stairs with her going on like that.

I set her down once I got inside and she tried to escape but fell over her feet and dropped to the ground, knocking over the coat stand with my jackets on it.

“Grrrr!” she wailed, flapping around in the mixture of jackets.

When I put my hand out to help her she knocked it away.

“Leave me alone! I’m going back to the party.”

I’d gotten to the stage of drunkenness where it was time to sleep it off so there was no way that I would have been able to stop her from leaving if she attempted it.

“Woman, for God’s sake, why do you keep insisting on torturing me?” I snapped.

She didn’t like that one bit. She got up, planted her hands on her hips, and glowered at me.

The anger on her face was one thing, but the sight of her breasts practically on show in that flesh-colored bra was distracting the hell out of me. Torture wasn’t the word.

“Me torture you? Are you kidding me?” she balked, shaking her head.

As she shook her head I noticed the slight ripple over the swells of her breasts and my eyes stayed there.

It was her little fists pummeling my chest that broke the spell.

“Stop it. Stop ogling me. How dare you look at me like that—like some stupid perv?”

Oh my God this was crazy as shit.

“Kelly, you were the one who was ready to strip in front of everyone. You work with those people. Didn’t you see Connor getting ready to cop a feel?”

“Stop acting like you care,” she threw back.

“What?” I winced with a deep scowl. “Since when did you think I was acting? You know I care. You’re in my apartment. This is caring galore. You wouldn’t tell me where you lived.”

“Because you forgot where I lived asshole! You were supposed to remember, but you forgot just like how you forgot me and ran off to Timbuktu and left me.”

No amount of alcohol could have stopped me from taking note of the anguish in her words.

I stepped closer and shook my head. “Kelly, I remember where you live. I can find it with my eyes shut. I just couldn’t remember the zip code for the driver. Your house is number 2567 Revello Drive, Mount Pleasant. I just can’t remember if it’s 45690 or 46690.” That seemed to stop her in her tirade. “See? I’ll bet I remember in the morning. It’s like that time when we ditched work and went to Tijuana and I couldn’t remember my pin number and the stupid cash machine took my card.”

“You remembered the next day,” she stated.

“Yes, see? When I’m wasted I get my numbers all mixed up. How could you think I forgot you?”

Her eyes filled with tears. “You were going to marry someone else. I was going to watch you marry some woman and say goodbye to you.” The tear trickled down her cheek.

I shook my head. “No. That wasn’t what would have happened.” It was the answer I could have given Melanie the other day. Part of me felt like an asshole for saying it now because there was so many things I could have done differently.

“Then what would have happened, Devon?”

I held her gaze. “I hoped I would have come to my senses a lot sooner somewhere along the line.”

  “Your senses?”

“The common sense that should have forced me to realize I shouldn’t have pushed you. If you didn’t feel the way I felt about you it was no reason to leave the way I did. Kelly, I broke up with you because I didn’t think you loved me. I didn’t think you loved me.” Considering my intoxication I was surprised at my ability to still be coherent. Thank God I was talking sense when it seemed to matter.

More tears spilled from her eyes. “No. That wasn’t true.”

  “I didn’t know.”

She intensified her gaze on me. “Would you have stayed?”

I took hold of her shoulders and bowed my head. “No. I wanted the job working with my father. But what I think would have happened is this: I would have asked you to wait for me. I would have come back every chance I got and seen you.”

I nodded and smiled at the thought. It was all so simple. Such a simple choice to have made. But I’d freaked and created this bigger problem and fanned the flames of disaster.

“I would have waited,” she answered.

The slight lift of her shoulders in my hands felt amazing. Touching her felt amazing. Like coming home. Being home.

She reached for my shirt and pulled me down to meet her lips.

Part of me wanted to pull away to be sure this wasn’t some act of drunkenness. The other part that had wanted her so damn badly gave in and became lost to her the minute her lips touched mine.

The fire of her consumed me, melting everything inside my being. Burning me right up from the inside out. Scorching me clean.

It had a similar effect to when I’d first kissed her years ago. It felt just like that.

This was us three years later. Two years’ worth of desire of being without each other. It was so much more.

When she tugged on the hem of my shirt, pulling it up, I backed away only to make it easier for her and lifted it over my head. I took off her top too and returned to her lips, filling my palms with her gorgeous breasts as I did so. And, fuck, that was me gone.

When she stepped out of my gasp, gave me that sexy smile that hardened my cock, and snapped the little butterfly clasp of her bra open, I knew I’d be lost to the call of want, desire, and lust.

Her gorgeous breasts spilled out as the silky fabric moved away from them and I was only too happy to indulge on her further.

The last thing I remembered was nuzzling my face deep into her cleavage while I ran my fingers over her bare nipples.

  ***

It was the sun that beamed down on me that gave me the first nudge.

Like someone had turned it up and made it brighter. If that were possible.

Piercing rays beamed down on me and a warm flutter of fingers ran over the length of my cock.

That snapped my eyes wide open.

I gazed up at the swirly patterns on the plaster of the ceiling. I moved my hand and realized I’d been holding onto something full and soft. A flick over a distinctive hard point told me that was a nipple. A soft moan of pleasure rumbled against my chest and I looked down to see Kelly in my arms.

Kelly in my arms in my bed, both of us butt naked, not even a bed sheet covering our bodies. I had one breast in my left hand and my right on her ass, while she had a good grip of my cock that hardened the minute I saw the purely sexual sight of her hand around me.

  Holy shit!

What the hell happened last night? I couldn’t remember. I couldn’t remember anything.

“Kelly?” I called her and she answered by tightening her grip on my shaft and I nearly died when she started running her hand up and down.

“You want more?” she asked in that half pleasure, half sexy tone I used to get drunk on.

  “Kelly.”

“Devon, what? Let’s just stay in bed and play with each other.”

I would have loved to do nothing more than that. I just had to check that she remembered.

“Kelly get up and look at me.”

Her eyes opened and she released me. She shuffled to sit up and there was a moment when I nearly rejoiced because it seemed like this wasn’t some drunken mishap. But…then her eyes widened and she shrieked.

She jumped back, away from me, looking around for something to cover her up. She
grabbed the pillow and held it close to her. It did nothing much to hide her. I covered up too with my pillow.

“Oh my God!” she wailed. “What the hell Devon?”

I opened my mouth to answer but I didn’t know what the hell to say. I couldn’t remember.

  “We slept together!”

  “Maybe? I don’t know. Possibly.”

“Oh my God. This isn’t happening.” She rushed out of the bedroom looking around for her clothes.

I grabbed a pair of boxers from my drawer and shoved them on.

When I went into the living room she was just shrugging into her shirt. Her panties and skirt were nearby. She put those on too but there was no sign of her bra anywhere.

“Kelly I’m sorry.” I thought I should apologize. But like everything else I’d said since coming back it seemed like the wrong thing to say.

“Yes, me too. What is the matter with you? Clearly I was drunk.”

“So was I. Look, I’m not sure what happened okay? Maybe we didn’t do anything.”

“My hand was all over your dick. We were naked. What does that spell?” she retorted.

“Okay, it’s not exactly the worst thing in the world. And aren’t you glad it’s me and not one of the others? You were wasted.”

“Are you listening to yourself?” She made a move to leave but I caught her arm.

“Come on. Give me a minute to get ready and I’ll give you a lift home.”

  “No.”

“You can’t go outside like that. Come on Kelly.” I reached for her again and she slapped my hand.

“Don’t touch me! Just don’t. I’m confused right now and I don’t know what I did with you. Whatever it was it feels like a mistake.”

It would have been better if she’d slapped me in my face, because that was what her words felt like. And, again, I stood there and watched her go.

  Chapter 9

  Kelly

It was true what people said.

There was a first time for everything.

It was the first time that I’d ever gone to Carla’s Coffeehouse with Paige and just stared at my food.

A giant brownie drizzled with chocolate syrup stared back at me from the plate. Along with a deluxe triple chocolate muffin given to me by Carla herself when she saw the state I was in as I’d entered her coffeeshop.
